Rochester's poetry often mocked the church and was explicitly blasphemous. His writing suggests that he was probably an atheist, which in that era was still a rare thing to admit publicly. Rochester would eventually find his faith as he battled the late stage syphilis that would eventually kill him. Part of his enduring fame came as a result of this late-in-life conversion.
