Catalonia - The Catalan Government
The Catalan government held a referendum last month in which 90% of the votes were in favour of declaring independence from Spain. The vote was declared illegal by Spain's constitutional court beforehand, and the central government confiscated ballots and closed polling stations. But that didn't stop regional president Carl's Puygdemont saying Catalonia would be independent. He stopped just short of actually declaring the state independent from Spain. All this drama has taken its toll on the region - public is sharply divided over the question of independence but parties are at a stalemate.
