Boiler Attachments

A steam jacket is a non conducting covering of wood, plaster, hair and rags. Dead plates are sometimes used to prevent cold air passing through the fire into the flues. A diaphraim plate is an perforated plate used in domes of locomotive boilers for preventing water dashing into the steam supply pipe. Some engineers do handle boilers without knowing all about these attachments. Their ignorance in many cases cost them their lives and the lives of others. Unless the nature and uses of these attachments are fully understood it will be impossible to handle the boiler in a thoroughly safe and scientific fashion.
