What Happens When Neutron Stars Collide?

We used to think that the production of really heavy metals, things heavier than iron, can't happen inside stars. We know that that mostly happens when neutron stars collide. Another time, you can get a neutron star colliding with something like a red giant. It's so dense that it could survive inside another star, like an orbit around that star.
