There are several billion tons of plastics out there now. Most of othes are being thrown away and will be buried in some way or other. Those plastics will eventually break down under heat and pressure to form the hydrocarbon deposits, the fossil fuel deposits of the far future. You know, we're pulling an awful lot of carbon out of the ground. The amount just in the atmosphere is about a trillion tons of carbon dioxide that we've put there just in the last century or two.
