The People's Comunes Are the Backbone of the Socialist Economy
Deng Xiaoping's reforms have lifted hundreds of millions out of poverty. They've transformed China's economic might and it's hard power standing in the world. The people's communes are allowed to retain any surplus they produce over and above state procurement quotas. By 1981, more than half of all individual households in a large number of provinces actually decide what they wish to plant.
