Is God Punishing?

I think a language of God punishing, for example, is problematic. How is that compatible with a peaceful omnipotence God? August at one point describes the state of hell as a state of permanent civil war. So that seems to be a kind of metaphysical inconsistency in Augustine. And it's important to realize, you know, the doctrine of eternal punishment is not in the creeds.
