The Origins of Adam's Genealogy

Ancient Near Eastern genealogies don't work the same way that ours do. They skip generations, ignore distinction between legal ties and biological ties. When two groups merge they will ascribe their common ancestry to somebody in the past who was named the same thing as their group. And so we're either on the historical individual idea or the symbol interpretation of Adam.
