John's Gospel - The Mother of Jesu
Mary, the mother of jesus, is never referred to by name in john's gospel. She is always jesus mother, or addressed as woman. The omission of her name is most likely significant on account of some symbolic role that she is playing. This episode, she seems to shift from functioning more as jesu's mother to being one of his disciples. Jesus response to her statement has a sort of distancing effect, while he honours her. He makes clear by his response that his father's business must determine his course.
