The communication landscape has totally fragmented as we described in the book Walter Cronkite has split into a million pieces everybody's getting their news from different places everything's mediated through different technological interfaces. As a result brands really can't dictate their brand image and so more and more brand image isn't what the brand tells its consumers it is the brand images what consumers tell each other it is. So the line between brand image and contemporary perception is getting much more porous and much more sort of free flowing and back and forth than ever before.

To get under the skin of how branding works, what makes it effective and how to build a successful brand, we talk with Matt Johnson PhD, who is an expert on the human side of business. Matt is a speaker, researcher, and writer specializing in the application of psychology and neuroscience to marketing. We discuss everything from the difference of brand strategy, brand personality and brand meaning, all the way to how brands can get involved in activism.
