Most philosophers are now content with pauper's contention that new theories are not inferred from anything, but are merely hypotheses. They accept that scientific progress is made through conjectures and refutations,. And that theories are accepted when their rivals are refuted. But they except that the knowledge obtained in this way tends to be reliable. The problem is they do not see why it should be.
