In ancient economies and in many cultures around the world today, the person that you're doing business with is much more important than. They needed to be a part of your ethnic group or your religion or your community, etc. And so there was a strong tribal preference for whatever tribe that you're interacting with. In the United States, at least when I was growing up in the 80s and 90s, that was not something we thought about.
