The book is written in such a way that it's deliberately unclear what the characters are saying to each other. Maud has been reading an encyclopaedia of porn since she was 11 years old, and her uncle invites her over to his house so she can learn about sexual nature. She just doesn't really understand how sex works or why people get aroused by it. Andrew MacKinnon: Is there any point where you're like, "I'm sure this happened," but don't know for sure?
