The Importance of Sound in Urban Life

In London history people were always reminiscing and they were always nostalgic about street cries too even in periods when they would have heard them. I think it's those human voices the human voices that are tuned and to a very particular purpose that really is going to strike us. The idea that you could hear someone shouting down your street as they brought you some fresh walnuts or something like that as they appeared in your season is wonderfully evocative. A fabulous scene within the film in which the central character Oliver wakes up one morning in the very pristine house of his benefactor in a grand London Square and he's woken by the cries of a particular kind of street vendor who's outside his window
