people in the UK I think just don't have that much experience with this. The idea that you might find someone and ask them a question and they might not speak perfect English is a little foreign perhaps to them strangely enough even when they go to Paris, Madrid or other places. For lots of Brits and I'm sure Americans are strange other non-native other native speakers of English they don't just don't understand how language can be adjusted. There's probably a lot of crowd control issues in classrooms in the UK in a language class.
