Human skeletal muscle fibers are the largest cell in all biology by volume. Think of a ponytail, the entire ponytail itself would be a muscle. They're long cylindrical, just like you described, pretty dense, pretty thick. And so what we know is it's very responsive to exercise. It doesn't matter what type of exercise per se. Even 11 days of extreme disuse can change fiber type profile.
