The early church had a higher commitment to prayer than we commonly do to day. A sheer daily prayer of them was just the assumption of the early believers for three centuries. Modern believers have an aversion to set prayers at set times, which are typically called offices. The first monasteries were founded in response to this in the fourth and fifth centuries. And more recently, eugene peterson has said that repetitions give us firm groundings for our prayers.
