The SS Brigade Führer Teodor Eike arrives with two subordinates. They find Rome lying on his bed with his shirt off, sweating away in the stifling heat. If I am to be killed, he shouts, let Adolf do it himself. So there's a real moment of experience, drama for the regime. Hitler was very good at presenting himself as the person who wasn't really responsible for the violence of the third-right. And through the night of the long knives, Hitler really played into this expectation.
