The Immortality of a Son

There is a pervasive sense of being able to be immortal through one's children. There are spells, charms, rituals described in the earlier punishmants for how to make sure that you have a good son. This is, of course, extremely important for the textual tradition, because it's a tradition that goes through fathers and sons. The notion that you have to let go of the person you know now to be your own personal identity is really essential, i think, to the apanishatic transformation of the ultimate religious goal,.
