The US has a terrible record on this, especially in the Middle East. The Middle East stands out as an exception because if you look at the post Cold War period, the US did get better in promoting democracy in other regions of the world. I mean, after supporting right wing anti-communist dictatorships in Latin America in the 60s, 70s, we start to see pressure on these autocrats in the 80s. And then the US does facilitate proper democratic transitions in that region, but also in Asia, Philippines, South Korea and so forth. So it's a mixture of these different factors.
