The Twin Peaks mythus comes as close to for me as a successful explanation of what's really going on. Once you've established a belief, the phenomenon adjusts its manifestations to support that belief and thereby escalate it. Even if it was just a guy that happened to look like a woodsman, it doesn't take anything away from what you perceived in that moment. The myth is essentially a product of the unconscious archetype and is therefore a symbol which requires psychological interpretation.
