The Passions Are of the Devil
Suffering is the creation of one's nervous system and its created in service of these drives. Epictetus says, if we use him as a representative for the stoics, again, he says that the passions and their tumults render onein capable of listening to reason. We might look to saint paul, associating the passions explicitly with sin and with the devil in the flesh, so to speak. He famously said that monogamy was acceptable as a way of life, but that celibacy was even more holy.
