conflict emerges between Philip the 4th of France and Pope Boniface VIII. The origins of this are fairly mundane but it's about money, isn't it? In 1303 when the French king and his advisors accuse the Pope of heresy they send a small army to arrest him with the intention of deposing him at a nanny in the papal states where the Pope is residing. He manages to escape, but two weeks later, he dies of shock. They draw up a dossier of crimes which the Pope had committed during his lifetime,. including sodomy and various acts of sexual impropriety - some people believe them to be true.
