The ability to compress information into a nice, tidy package is what allows us to create most of the reality that we live in. So how does a little piece of paper become money? It's because we all agree to impose a function on this piece of paper that it doesn't have by virtue of its physical nature. The mortgage crisis, for example, happened because some people decided that mortgages actually couldn't be traded for material goods any more. That's a metaphor for moving your way up a hierarchy. And similarly, we can look at an object and understand that that object can have different functions in different situations.
