The state has no right to tell you what your gender is except force. The extent to which the state has actually been able to sort of do this kind of stuff has changed over time. You know, sometimes that's literally just an explicit pay gap. In order to buy alcohol in order to get on an airplane, you have to conform to the state's bureaucratic view of you. And if you don't, you can't do it.
