What's So Exciting About Civil Wars?

Christopher Hill felt events in 1640s and 1650s were so climactic that they really altered our country's destiny. That provoked a reaction against the more sort of deterministic teleological aspects of some of the economic analysis. Lawrence Stone, another historian who was writing on the causes of English civil wars in the early 70s put the date right back to the beginning of the 16th century.
