The Smithsonian's Problem With the Sweet Potato
The Smithsonian has a problem with the sweet potato. Sweet potatoes are native to the Americas, but an ancient sweet potato is found in the Cook Islands. That would mean that 500 years before Columbus, a Native American tribe traveled across the Pacific and brought sweet potatoes with them. The cultures that emerged in North America did not have contact with Central America or South America; definitely didn't contact cultures across the oceans.
