Hitchcock grew up into an anxious child. He did not deal well with being left alone and was prone to flights of wild paranoia. Donald Spotto who worked the biography The Dark Side of Genius notes that it's impossible to confirm or deny Hitchcock's story about being locked in a cell for five minutes. It definitely says something about him as a person.
