In Living Color was the first successful black show on Fox. The New York Times praised the show's quirkiness and its willingness to embrace social issues in episodes. Newsweek panned the series as the apothecis of the sex-obsessed homeboy shucking his way to nowhere. Professor Crystal Brent Zook felt the show had an undercurrent of misogyny.
