Some of the earliest work I did on the book was in film. And what I noticed, just by even a casual watching of films, early 50s, late 40s,. Was this sort of disturbing presence of the World War II veteran. Instead of welcoming this veteran home with open arms, which is of course part of the myth that I had absorbed over the years.
