Composting in the D.C. Area?
About 50% of waste is organic material that could be composted, meaning it wouldn't wind up being incenterated or in a land fill. Composting with local farmers markets and the community gardens are two ways to get started. Curbside pickups will give you a bucket, usually, and it has a lid. You can just kind of seal it off, place it out on the curb when you're ready for them to pick it up. The only thing they don't take meat or dairy at this time is that they don't want to deal with any more pests than necessary.
