These men were obviously successful in lowering the birth rate, but they could never have foreseen how the policy has given birth to a generation of women who are now taking hold of their reproductive rights. To get to the future, Beijing is going to have to reconcile with its past. This is China's demographic revolution. It's happening in Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, as well as the United States.
