In coleridge's day, during the height of the romantic eraa, the sublime was a concept that was only kind of recently beginning to be discussed in english literature. Edmund burke had written a book about on the sublime and beautiful. And ad introduced the sublime as a particular species of beauty which had an element of strangeness and often terror, a assigned to it. As lewis points out, something either is or is not sublime.
