CHAPTER

The Battle of the Alps

Napoleon sent a messenger with news and orders from messena instructing him to reach the city at any cost. The remaining genoese civilians rioted demanding food or an end to the siege, or both. Massena put them down with an iron fist and placed the city under darconian martial law. As supplies dwindled, he himself began to weaken and fell sick. His aids began to worry he might not survive. But still, he would not give in. Napoleon's march through the alps was unprecedented in its scale and speed. It was one of the most famous campaigns of classical times.
