The neocortical brain also gives us the capacity for self reflection. And that means to be able to look at ourselves, either after we've done something, or even in the process of doing something. We often produce pain for ourselves by trying to do more than we can do and maintain a healthy balance life style. Without self ction, you can pretty much rest guaranteed that the pain teacher will be hanging out at your doorstep.
