The Role of Reasons in Agent Behavior
When we say that an agent acts for reasons, what we normally want to say is that actually not had those reasons. She would not have acted that way, that counterfactual is true. And finally, it accords with a normal practice. When we say somebody is not free, we don't say that not free because they are determined. We say they are notfree because they are compelled in a particular way. They are compelled or they are forced or they co-erced.
