HAP 30 - Dualist Personality - Anton Wilhelm Amo

History of Philosophy: India, Africana, China

CHAPTER

The Impassivity of the Human Mind

Amo is a strict dualist who refuses to believe that mind can be affected by body. For him, the mental and the physical are two very different kinds of thing. Whereas the body can be passively affected, the mind is a spirit which means it is perpetually engaged in understanding. If we take seriously the idea that spirit and body are fundamentally different, then the fact that light affecting the eye can yield the judgment in the mind may seem downright inexplicable. It would be as if the number four were to drink a cup of coffee.
