The Importance of the British Navy
Macmillan says that if the Germans were upset by Churchill's comment that their navy was a luxury, she says that terpets in the Kaiser never really understood how vitally important it was to Britain. By 1900, Britain didn't just rely on raw materials from the colonies to fuel their industries. They depended on it for food, 58% of the calories consumed in Britain came from overseas. Little children in Britain learned about the Spanish Armada and Napoleon. The moral of those stories is the navy saved us.
