In June of 1963, King and other civil rights leaders met with John F. Kennedy to discuss plans for a march in the South that would mark the centenary of Abraham Lincoln's emancipation proclamation. The meeting was arranged by Bayard Rustin, who later went on to become President Barack Obama's first African-American vice president. In an unspoken quid pro quo, Kennedys told King he had to pick his own deputy: Mr. Pasadena, nude vagrancy,. He can't march at the front and you have to spearhead this yourself.
