Liminal and his inherent creatureliness dehumanized or dehumanizing himself. He distances himself from Western but also from the Western world that he inhabits. Later we see that face-to-face can be deeply dangerous in this text as well as eerie eye contact and a drink which paralyzes by sense combine.
