The Bailey Gifford Prize has a different sifting process. The book that won Philippe Sern's extraordinary East West Street has elements of memoirs, partly a family saga. I was slightly criticized in fact that the short list was based on non-fiction, which had many tropes of the memoir genre. And also you told me one very prestigious economics commentator at the FT, said the shortlist was very literary this year.
