The story, three jews is basically the story of what happens to a man, a jewish man, who holds on to customs and old, stubborn tribal allegiances. It's making the case for tolerance. This was a pre notse anti semitic era when there's enough loathing to go around that it spills into a kind of self loathing by wolf himself. He was a fish out of water all his life. His feelings of being jewish, and virginia's feelings about being married to him, are a whole other topic. The author can be one step further away.
