In recent years, almost every figure of the Enlightenment seems to have come in for a special form of criticism and lambasting. The people who produced it felt themselves to be the victims of a kind of cancel culture in their own time. But they saw themselves very loosely as part of a project of bringing to bear on the problems of the day.
