Defenders of divine command theory say that god's nature is essentially good. This fact is supposed to explain why we ought to obey god, and why we should worship him. But if the term good is not just an empty epithet then it must be that the facts about what is good are independent of the other facts about god. According to divine command theory, there is no moral standard independently of god's will. It is only if God's existence is not necessary for morality, it must also mean anything at all.
