Scientists have tried to manipulate the epigenome in the past. Their work takes advantage of a great deal of work of other people, which is why they were able to move so quickly. They built on what had been done in zinc fingers and tails for bringing in different epigenetic effectors. That opened up the field of programmable epigenetic modifiers.
