The poetry of griffith's era was a very different art form. It was meant to be performed. And actually, if you made a really good poem, it would still be many years before it was written down. Typically, the act of having a poem written down would be paid for by one lord or another. Being hired to perform a poem or to write it down was one of the main ways that poets during this period made money.
