It's a very complex question because in essence, it can be arbitrary and it's changing right now. One of the answers that comes from my gut right now is whatever that emergency room wants to charge you. Depending on your insurance level, depending on all these different factors, the incentives in the American healthcare system are for the corporations to just charge you.

Despite spending more per capita on healthcare than any other country, millions of Americans are still uninsured or underinsured, and healthcare outcomes vary significantly by race, ethnicity, and socioeconomic status.
