CHAPTER

The Connection Between Extra Tropical Cyclones and Atmospheric Rivers

The temperature gradient between the pole and the equator represents a form of potential energy. Cyclones form initially from that potential energy and turn it into the kinetic energy of the wind. Along the way they can form an atmospheric river which transports tons of water vapor. All that heat takes to evaporate the water off the ocean gets re-released into the atmosphere when it condenses into rain or snow. That heat transforms the cyclone, on average it will deepen 50% faster if there's already an atmospheric river nearby.
