Are We Dependent on All the Knowledge That's Come Before Us?

We can no longer afford to solve our problems holely. In order to make the same incremental growth and advancements that we made before, we now have to spend expedentially larger amounts of resources. How could we possibly come up with new innovations for a problem when that problem is a lack of the resources needed for the innovation in the first place?
