The idea of positive and negative politeness are they're fascinating concepts to me. I think this whole idea that we're getting less polite over time is really tied to this shift in what kinds of politeness are preferred. And negative politeness is not considered polite to those that think positive politeness is the way to go. How much does negative politeness either dovetail with or correlate with just fear of giving offense? Is that another way to say negative politeness? Yes, it's both tied together.
